Plan ahead:

Determine the best neighbourhoods and routes that you’ll visit. Try to find areas where the houses aren’t spread too far apart, so you spend less time per house.

Educate:

Let people know what items you’ll be collecting. And if you’re allowing drop-offs, let them know how to sort the recyclables. You can also share helpful info such as which containers are recyclable and which ones pay a return. For more details about which containers are recyclable, follow this link.

Recruit volunteers:

Make sure you get clear commitments from your group or teammates for the date and time of the bottle drive. A shared Google Doc is a great way to keep an up-to-date list.

Spread the word:

Promote the bottle drive through various channels such as social media, flyers, posters, and word-of-mouth. Provide clear instructions on when you’re picking up or where and when to drop off the bottles.

Provide incentives:

Offer incentives such as prizes or rewards for the individuals or groups who collect the most bottles. Something simple like a food or drink gift card can be a cost-effective incentive.

Select the type best type of drive:

Regional recycling offers three types of bottle drives, each offering different levels of convenience and payment per recyclable container. No-Sort, FastDrop, and Full-Sort. Visit this link to select the one for your group.

No-Sort
We pick up your unsorted bags, and you can earn 7 cents per recyclable container.

FastDrop

Drop off your unsorted bags of empties at a FastDrop counter for a full refund.
Full-Sort
Bring your containers to any depot, sort them on Location, and get a full refund.

Express gratitude:

Be sure to thank all volunteers and donors for their contributions and express your appreciation for their support. Volunteering to collect bottles for the day is hard work. If it’s a youth team, try to have something special for them, such as a snack and soda waiting for them when they’re done.

Following these best practices can help ensure a successful bottle drive that raises money and awareness for your cause. To learn more about Regional Recycling fundraising options, check out this blog: How we help local teams raise money.
