Halloween is almost here! Are you like so many of us and have NO IDEA what your family’s costumes will be or how to decorate your house? Do not fear; we got you. This list is full of fun and simple ideas to make your own Halloween costumes and decorations from recycled materials from around your home. Save money and be spooky!

DIY Bat costume from a broken umbrella

Do you have a broken black umbrella lying around your house? This can be turned into the perfect pair of bat wings! Just cut it up and attached it to any long sleeve black shirt, and you instantly become a stylish bat. This costume is not recommended for little ones as they could hurt themselves on the metal piece, but it’s great for big kids and adults! Toilet Paper Roll Bats, Ghosts & Spooks

All you need for these cute little decorations is toilet paper rolls, construction paper – old cardboard boxes work great too, and some paint. You can make a variety and decide how detailed to get with these goblins, ghouls, and ghosts. This craft is great for all ages and will make your house look super spooky!

The Grim Reaper from an old skirt and some tinfoil

Grab that old black maxi skirt from the back of your closet, and it can easily be turned into a cloak for this costume. Cut it down one side and armholes to make a robe, then just wear a long-sleeved black coat or shirt under the robe. This is a great way to keep kids warm when they’re out collecting candy. The staff can be made from any old broom handle or similar, then cut the clad from cardboard and wrap it in tinfoil. If you have an old skirt and an old box, you can make this costume with everything you have at home!

Glowing Ghosts from Plastic Milk Jugs

Are you looking for a creative and affordable way to decorate your yard or driveway? Trick-or-Treaters will love seeing your yard light up with these Milk Jug Ghosts. They are super easy to make, and you’ll likely have all the materials in your house already! Just grab an empty 4-litre milk jug, remove any labels, draw a ghost face on there with a sharpie, and put a light inside of it. Presto, you have a spooky ghost that can survive any weather conditions!

The magical cardboard box

When you’re in a pinch, don’t forget about the power of the cardboard box. With a bit of paint and an Exacto knife, a box can become a variety of costumes such as a dinosaur head, a robot, an astronaut, various Minecraft characters, a train, a taco; the opportunities are endless!
