Can I Recycle Propane Tanks in BC?
Sorry we do not recycle propane tanks at our lower mainland Regional Recycling locations but here’s a few options on where you can take them.
Places to recycle Propane Tanks In BC
Return to Supplier:
Many propane suppliers have a take-back program where you can return your empty or partially used tanks. Companies like Canadian Tire, Home Depot, and U-Haul often have exchange programs where you can trade your old tank for a new one at a discounted price.
Household Hazardous Waste Programs:
Some municipalities in BC offer household hazardous waste (HHW) collection programs that accept propane tanks. Check with your local government or waste management authority for information on these programs.
Scrap Metal Yards:
Some scrap metal yards accept propane tanks for recycling, provided they are empty and depressurized. Contact local scrap yards to see if they accept propane tanks.
Vancouver Zero Waste Centre:
Taking your compressed gas cylinders to the Vancouver Zero Waste Centre ensures safe and responsible disposal. The centre is equipped to handle hazardous materials, preventing potential hazards like explosions or fires that can occur with improper disposal. By using the Zero Waste Centre, you help protect workers and the environment while supporting Vancouver’s sustainability efforts.

PLACES NOT ACCEPTED
Regional Recycling Lower Mainland
Regional Recycling cannot take propane tanks of any size at any of our lower mainland Regional Recycling locations. Our Nanaimo locations can take the 1 LB containers only.
DO NOT Put Them In Blue Bin or Waste Bin
Please do not place your compressed gas cylinders in your blue recycling bin or garbage. Including compressed gas containers in curbside or apartment recycling bins is dangerous due to the health and safety risks they pose to workers and recycling facilities. These bins are designated for packaging and paper only.
Compressed gas cylinders can cause significant damage if they explode. If ruptured, they can become self-propelled rockets or catch fire, which is especially hazardous in a sorting facility where flammable materials like paper and cardboard are present. Additionally, many compressed gases are toxic or corrosive, requiring special handling to ensure safety during the recycling process.
Propane tanks are dangerous to equipment operators and should NEVER be placed in the garbage.
